Sisyphus
Do you ever think that
Sisyphus gets complaints
from his bosses and colleagues
that he isn’t pushing hard enough,
that he is lacking ambition and drive,
that he yawns and frowns
when he should smile
and say hi?
Do they not see
the burden he carries-
the giant boulder
pushing on his shoulders,
the weight of knowing
your work is never over?
How do you face the face
of ambition
when you’re cursed to toil in eternity-
the face of a sad mother
and a disappointed father,
the face that sinks your
heart into your stomach
like the anchor of a ship,
feeling that you’re good enough
but knowing you’ll never be?
